Winter Festivals in Hokkaido!

Winter Festivals in Hokkaido

From late November to early February, where midwinter days with the highest temperatures below 0°C continue, Hokkaido is bustling with snow and ice festivals.

1. Chitose and Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival

An ice festival held in Lake Shikotsu hot springs in a national park.

Late January–late February, 2017

Chitose and Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival is an ice festival held in Lake Shikotsu hot springs in Shikotsu-Toya National Park, located about 40 minutes away by car from Sapporo city. There are lines of ice sculptures made by spraying water from Lake Shikotsu, which boasts some of the clearest water in Japan, and freezing it. The ice slide, the rink where you can slide around in boots, and the horse rides around the venue are popular with children. From 18:30 on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays during the event period, there is the launching of around 300 fireworks, as well as Wadaiko drum performances. The hot springs around the venue also offer baths for day trippers, so after you have warmed your cold body up, enjoy a meal and choosing souvenirs in the hot spring town.

3. Sapporo Snow Festival

Three Sites Featuring Snow Sculptures Large and Small
Visited by Tourists from Around the World

February 5–11, 2017

The Sapporo Snow Festival began in 1950, when local middle and high school students exhibited six snow sculptures at Odori Park. Today, it has become a major wintertime spectacle in Sapporo attracting over 2 million visitors from all over Japan and abroad. Snow sculptures and ice sculptures large and small line Odori Park for around 1.5 km between 1-chome and 12-chome, and the statues are lit up at night. The 11-chome site is for international participants, where teams from around the world display their works, and you can also watch their works in progress during the festival. The Tsudome site has giant snow slides and other ways to have fun in the snow, while the Susukino venue features an ice sculpture contest, an ice bar, and colorful lighting for night-time viewing.

4. Otaru Snow Light Path

A dreamlike winter tradition, where the old-fashioned townscape of Otaru is illuminated with candles

5–14 February, 2017

Otaru Snow Light Path is a winter tradition in the port city of Otaru where the streets are decorated with a myriad of snow candles. The main venues are the historic Otaru canal and the former Japan National Railways Temiya Line, which keep alive the history of Otaru that flourished as the gateway to the development of Hokkaido. The canal, which has ball candles using fishing gear floating on the surface, is a great photo spot. At the Temiya Line venue, which has snow candles and a snow slide, there are many foreign volunteers and it has become a place for travelers to mix. From the desire for you to “enjoy the food of Otaru”, there are also tickets on sale during the event period which let you enjoy eating sushi, sweets or noodles inexpensively as you walk around. Fully enjoy the taste of the city of Otaru together with the dreamlike scenery.
